Best game demo for the Mac?
Old School = Tie ---- Myth 1 /  Diablo 1
Current Day = Call of Duty

If I find myself playing a demo over and over, that is usually the hallmark of a great game worthy of purchasing the full version.

I'd say StarCraft. For months, I played against my neighbour, until we both bought the game.
Actually, all Blizzard demos are brilliant. I still have a copy of the Warcraft I demo on my computer.

Recently, though, I'd have to go with Burning Monkey Solitaire. I just love how the monkeys pester and guilt you into buying the game.

I like the Medal of Honor Spearhead demo. Whenever I feel like a little team based shoot-em-up in Malta, there are always plenty of games going on around the clock.

Warcraft 3 is also good for a quick 1 on 1 skirmish.

Multiplayer demos are cool, because unlike single player demos, they rarely play the same way twice.
Work: MacBook - 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo - 4GB RAM - X3100 graphics.
Home: Mini - 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo - 2 GB RAM - GeForce 9400 graphics.

Another vote for the Spearhead demo. I played the Malta map for hours and hours online. The UT2004 demo was great as well, especially the onslaught map.

The demo that got the most replay from me was the Marathon 1 demo.  II must have played hundreds of 5 minute games on 'Mars needs women'.  And when my buddies and I got the retail version, we kept on playing 'mars needs women'  great map, wonderful demo.

Postal 2 is cool, if you're old enough.

Since you can just run around doing whatever you want, the demo can stay fresh for quite some time.

Seconded, they even came up with a new single player campaign (well, 3 levels at least) just for the demo.  The fact that all terran units were available for multiplayer was great too, as you could play a full uncrippled game against someone.

I'd have to go AvP Gold (mainly the multiplayer, although I played the single player portion quite a bit as well).

Or Gish.  Gish just rocks hard all around.

A good demo is something I play over and over till I get the game.
In no particular order:
1) Civilization 2.
2) Myth 1.
3) Jedi Knight 2. (The demo level is not in the game and does not require a CD, so the demo is still on my Mac)
4) Call of duty.

There's no demo I've played as much as the original Unreal Tournament. I even played the demo after I got the full game, so we could play it at the research station against eachother.

Another good demo was Fallout since it actually was a completely different story in the demo compared to the full game. It made the demo fun even when having the full game if you just wanted to go mad.

Oh and yeah, the JKII demo. Really sweet one. Thanks for reminding me Chris.
You shouldn't ask yourself such worthless questions. Aim higher. Try this: why am I here? Why do I exist, and what is my purpose in this universe?

(Answers: 'Cause you are. 'Cause you do. 'Cause I got a shotgun, and you ain't got one.)

Except in the demo you start with force capabilities, and in the actual game you have to muck along without them for practically half the game.  What a downer.  That really embittered me toward the demo, that slick misleading little piece of software.

Ohh, it took me a while to discover that. Got killed after 2 seconds running about 10 times over and was about to throw the demo away "How do you survive this thing?". Then I discovered the lightsaber....Ahh, "Playing pong with the Jedi". Stormtroopers lose.

And it also took me a while get good enough with the saber to kill the dark Jedi (Reborn), my trick here was to run back to the central platform, jump onto it and hide behind the column. For some reason the Reborn seemed to be unable to land safely on the plattform and instead went spiraling down the chasm. :P
It's also possible to kill stormtroopers in the end cutscene, using termal detonators.
Yes, I played that demo a LOT of times.

On OS 9, it was definitely Unreal Tournament. I played that game for over half a year before I broke down and bought the actual game. I should have waited a couple more months though, since the GOTY edition came out for like $20 less than the original.

On Mac OS X, the Warcraft 3 demo was really cool, because you got to play a completely differenct story line. I had already beat the game, and had received the demo on a CD from a movie theater.

Definitely the JK2:JO demo. In fact, it's probably more fun than a significant proportion of the full game! The JK2:JA demo was pretty sweet as well, with two levels on offer instead of one. But it was a lot more system intensive and kinda put me off buying the retail version.

The RtCW demo was super-sweet as well, and the level set in the crypts was actually quite scary – the first time those zombie monster things appeared I almost jumped out of my seat!

Other than that, Diablo 1's demo was awesome; I also thoroughly enjoyed the Myth and Oni demos.

And you can't forget the two demos that made buying the full version unnecessary: The original Worms game demo and the Unreal Tournament demo – both offering free unlimited multiplayer!

Tie between Call of Duty and Starcraft.

Call of Duty had the best single player mission in the whole game for their demo which was just kickass.

Starcraft gave you a nice taste of the game, and I remember playing it on and on and on.

I may vote for BF1942 if this MP demo runs well on my iMac. The SP demo was just horrendous. I'm hoping MP is less demanding, but I doubt that.

I dont get why no mention has been made of the Escape Velocity demos (EV, EVO, EVN). Those were obscenely long and good.
