An article at Anandtech which pointed out that Pioneer displayed a DVR-106 burning a regular DL-DVD disc after a simple ROM update. While I realize that the first ad foremost goal of a company is to increase revenues, is there a possibility that Pioneer would release this firmware to let us DVR owners burn DL-DVDs (albeit, only at 2x) instead of having to buy a new drive?

Dual Layer DVD. Its a DVD with twice as much space.  Many movie DVD's are two layers now a days.

Right... that would be nice.. as i mentioned in another thread, my grandfather is pestering me to help him get all of his home movies onto DVD.  the more video i can get onto one disc, the better.

Do DL-DVD's use different media? or just the capability to burn a second layer?

I think it was MacAddict that said DL-DVDs are for professionals only, so you'll to buy a professional burner and authoring software and those aren't cheap, I think.

I guess you'll have to stick with iDVD, for now. At least, that's what I'm doing with our home movies.

I don't have a link handy, but there was actually a recently released DL-DVD burner for private use, as well as a new 12x burner. I'm pretty sure you do need new media that supports DL burning, though.

DL-DVD is coming pretty soon for home use, and the + forum is probably going to have them first. The - forum (guys like Pioneer) are going to release it a bit later but I was just wondering aloud if they would be nice enough to allow people with drives that are capable to burn these things.
