We had great times in my dorm playing Warcraft 2 into the wee hours, so that one has the best memories for me.

I pretty much suck at games like this, but I think I liked Starcraft the best, although Myth 2 is excellent as well.

Okay, jacking this topic a bit...

I've been in the mood for an RTS for a while now, but I don't think I've bought one in a long time, since WCIII I guess.  WCIII is great, but it's not what I'm looking for.  The focus on Heroes in WCIII doesn't do it for me.  Don't flame.  I love the game.  It just doesn't satisfy me in an RTS way, the way WCII did.

Anyhow, I thought I'd ask you all what to get.  I know this thread lists many great games already, but I'm not talking best RTS of all time.  I'm talking about the best RTS for me to get now (I'm a bit of a smurfette for new games and high production value, i.e. good graphics and sound, to go with the incredible gameplay of course, and it has to run in OSX).

So what should I get?  I'm partial to RTS games with bows and swords instead of guns, but that's not a big deal.  Star Wars GB should be on its way to me in the form of my free game from IMG.  Perhaps that's all I need.

Without a doubt, you need to check out Warrior Kings, it fills your specifications perfectly. It's a medieval-themed fantasy, knights, demons & gunpowder RTS, and it rocks, IMHO. The troop control is awesome, you get to put them into formations that cactually make a difference to their performance, and it has got the whole conecpt of "combined arms" down perfectly - where certain units may fare better over better eqipped foes by taking advantage of formations and topography.
the graphics are sweet, the maps are huge and in beatiful 3D, and the battles are enormous. The story-line is thoroughly engrossing, and online play can't be beat. Plus you get three different, distinct paths in the single-player campaign, so even when you've beaten the game the first time round, you can go back and see how things turn out differently by making other choices.
Seriously, if you're looking for a perfect cross between something like Myth and AoE that's a replacement for Warcraft 3, look no further.

One thing – be prepared for a challenge. It's by no means the easiest RTS game around.

I've played through the full game and 75% of the expansion and it still doesn't hold a candle to Myth. Online or SP.
You shouldn't ask yourself such worthless questions. Aim higher. Try this: why am I here? Why do I exist, and what is my purpose in this universe?

Starcraft beats Myth in almost any aspect of gameplay in my humble onpinion.  the multiplayer is what does it for me.  there's nothing like an 8 person FFA or a 3 v. 3 deathmatch at BigGameHunters to get the blood rushing.  :-D that and the low system requirements mean that i can have multiple applications running at the same time, changing iTunes mixes is essential when zealot rushing from 1:30am till 9am

I remember the good old days of Bungie net. I was even in a mac clan.

My god I sucked at Myth II.

I would have to say Myth is the bettr game.   Starcraft is ok and can be rude (i like it) but it was not enough for me.  Myth was just cool.  Myth TFL and Myth II i would say is the best RTS.

I would list
MYTH
SWGB
EU2
AOE2
WarCratf (all of them)
StarCraft

I didnt really get to play TA as much as i like.  I think i would list it if i could get more time in on it.  Command and Conquer was also ok but i idnt really get too many games in.  These games are only good if i can get others to play it.  So little time so many games.

Let me see...

My top three

Warcraft III
The Myth Series -the only RTS I've ever won
Starcraft -still can't rescue Tasadar

My bottom two

AOE2- Too Hard! Those darn enemy rushes in the campaigns kill me every time
SWGB- built on the aboves engine, enogh said.

Honorable mention

AOE - better than AoE2, can actually win one of the campaigns

I seem to remember it being either too easy or too hard.  a quick doom or a sure, eventual thing with lots of cleanup.

now, multiplayer was much more fun...

Best RTS would have to go in the following order.

Wc3 - Best RTS there is in my opinion.

AoM - Better than AoE 2 I'd say.

AoE 2 - A great old RTS.

That's my opinion.

Definitely Starcraft. I mean, sure I've always liked the C&C and Warcraft series, but nothing is more satisfying than to decimate your opponent with a horde of Zergs... also of all the rts's I've played it certainly had the best balance of the different races' units.

Now these are no RTS but they are also two of my favorite turn-based strategy games:
Spaceward Ho! (have been playing it since it first came out back in the heydays and still playing the newest incarnation; talk about appeal!)
Master Of Orion 2
