1990 transcript of adventure game designers discussion

29 December 2018 - 05:17 PM

Just putting this here in case someone is interested.

Poking around some old disks I found something interesting: a transcript of a 1990 online conference featuring some big-name designers of classic adventure games. I have posted it to my blog: https://www.mindthec...compuserve-1990

Turns out a computer game historian posted an edited version of it earlier this year. His intro and footnotes are very good, but I think when he edited the discussion it lost some of the flavor. The participants joked around a lot and the edited version lacks a lot of it. But he's the historian so see his blog for the excellent intro and footnotes.

My "new" Xbox 360

26 November 2018 - 01:42 PM

For the last couple of years I've cut back on game purchases to play my backlog. But I was in a GameStop on Black Friday weekend and they had refurbished Xbox 360's for free after rebate. And it turns out I have no willpower at all when things are free.

In my defense, the main reason I caved is that I had been wanting to play some Assassin's Creed ever since I read Richard Moss's oral history.

I do have some questions:

1. I have the Xbox plugged into my computer monitor, which thankfully had an audio out jack. I had been planning to upgrade to a 4k or 5k monitor next year. But I'm not seeing 5K monitors that are HDMI compatible, even with an adaptor. Am I missing something?

2. Any recommendations for games? I already picked up Batman Arkham Origins and Assassin Creed 2 Revelations (though I might ditch that in favor of AC1, Brotherhood, or IV).

3. If I play a Halo which should it be? (I played the first one on Mac.)  There seems to be some consensus online that its either Halo 3 or Reach.

The Next Apple Event

23 October 2018 - 01:28 PM

Tue Oct 30, 10:00 EST - it's in NYC, Brooklyn Academy of Music. (I'm wondering if the choice of locale is significant. Don't they usually do these on the west coast?

Some nice designs on the media invites. I'm especially fond of the rainbow colored one, a throwback to my favorite Apple logo.

Let the pointless speculation begin!

Mac Game Headlines of Yesteryear

01 June 2018 - 11:11 AM

Well this is a huge waste of time, but I've been looking through old IMG news headlines. From the news archive page I pick a month at random and poke around. http://www.insidemac...ews/archive.php

A few fun ones I found from 2002:

April 3, 2002: Myst Miniseries Coming to TV

I can't wait to watch it!

Feb 1, 2002: IMG Interviews Steve Jobs

Nice get! Presumably this was during one of Jobs' infrequent "we like games" moods. Money quote: "When I returned to Apple a few years ago, games were viewed as something which would paint the Mac as a less-than-serious business tool, so game development was discouraged. We feel quite differently, and actively try to nurture our game developers."

Apr 3 2002: IMG Reviews Geneforge

Some outfit called Spiderweb Software, publishing an old school 2D RPG even as 3D video cards were sweeping the market. Really bad timing. Good luck selling that, Jeff Vogel! Don't quit your day job!

Apr 17, 2002: Tuncer is a Dad!

I don't have anything snarky to say about this one.  It just reminded me that my daughter was just a baby back then. Now she's in high school... (sniff) Sorry, I just need a minute...

Okay I'm back. It's also fun to reminded of old games. Freedom Force?! I'd love a modern remake of that.

Surprising number of names in 2002 are still relevant. Bungie and Blizzard of course, but also there's news about USB Overdrive (which I just started using again this week.) Civ III, X-Plane. Feral is mentioned only occasionally, Aspyr is on fire back then, but both are still around today.
