I'd definitely have to go with the JKII demo as well.  I must have played this at least twice a day for a few months after I got it.  And, figuring out that the demo supports a lot of the cheat codes was a major plus.    I spent way too much time changing saber colors and slicing off torsos with "g_saberrealisticcombat"

I'd vote for the demo for Pathways Into Darkness.

For its time, it was just a "what the ****?" sort of experience.   That game had great atmosphere.  :)

(We can see in the dark.... can you?  Please excuse our dust!

... but wait!  There's more!

Who else wants some?)

PS:  Yah, I know, those levels weren't in the demo.

Yes JKII is a very nice game, at least in my eyes. I own both Jedi Knight II and Jedi Academy. The demo dosen't really give you a good example of how the game is. Multiplayer is much different in how players play. There are some very good players out there.

As for another demo that I like to play is Pocket Tanks. Not the best game out there, but it can get addicting!

If you have time to download, try the Vendetta (Spelling?) demo. I beta tested it and it is a very nice space shooter game.

Must be a tie between Warcraft II and Marathon II.
"They're everywhere!"

And now, time for some Legend of Zelda.

The Halo demo is fun, especially since you get that bonus cinematic at the end, with a plug for the full version by Sargent Johnson.

Wait, was there ever a Mac demo of Halo?

Another estimate of the value of a demo is how badly it makes you want the full game - in this light, I'd vote for Civilization 2, Caesar 3, Diablo 2, and Warcraft 3. These demos were finely tuned to give you just enough to get you hooked, and for all four I just needed MORE.

The Civ2 demo should have come with an addiction warning label or something. Like you said, it made me WANT that game so bad. In fact, it was the first Mac game I ever bought. Took me some time to save up the money too.

The full game hooked me even worse. I remember games that took full months to get anywhere near finished with (ahhh... how I long for the days of almost infinite free time).

I love the JKII demo, but I had already played through the game ... well, I don't know how many times, before it was out.  What I liked was that it was not a chunk out of the game, that it was a self-contained mission giving a flavor for everything in the game ... except for combat without a saber.  So I think it could have been enhanced if there was a section without a saber (say Jan dropped equipment and it fell separately and you needed to find it).

Personally, I absolutely loved the opening non-saber missions.  They felt like Dark Forces homage to me, and played like a modern version of DF.  So I thought it was great.

Actually, it was kind of half and half. I was a bit sarcastic about the fact that Macsoft never pulled a Mac Halo demo together, but I'm telling the truth when I say that it is one of the funnest game demos.

If there were a demo, I probably WOULDN'T have bought the game.

MacSoft has been very shady when it comes to Halo.... they are letting all the hype push the game, and have done absolutely nothing to offer a demo, and the first several updates to Halo were purely for anti-piracy and did nothing to improve it's poor performance.

Are you kidding? There have been a bunch of performance improvements, as well as PC netcode compatibility. But on the whole, I trust Aspyr to produce a better overall final product.

Yeah, AFTER the first 3 or so which were all purely anti-piracy updates.  I even recall one of the first patches making it so you had to have the CD in to play, which wasn't originally needed.... now there's some top-notch user support... "for your first updates folks, we are making you have to insert the CD to play a game you BOUGHT because there are a lot of kids stealing it."  And, everyone knows that requiring the CD to play does nothing to stop piracy.

Aspyr blows MacSoft out of the water... they aren't even in same category, in my opinion.
