When the game switches the monitor resolution to 2560x1440, then the GPU only has this amount of work to do.
I should have specified that I was thinking about situations where the game runs with black columns on the side, so the monitor is still at its native resolution?

I finally caved and ordered an UW, the LG 34GK950F-B. It's going to take a few weeks to ship though. I'll spend that time getting used to keeping my dock on the bottom, instead of the left (work) or right (home).
Lets us know what you think!

In just surprised no one noticed and/or made fun of my stuffed animals and F-bomb.
Some people are into furries, some find chairs sexy. You like stuffed animals. It is okay, we won't pick on you! We're good guys. 8)

Specifics (or a link)? What problems should I expect?
It appears that prior to Big Sur, macOS doesn't do pixel-doubling on high resolution UW monitors. This appears to have been fixed in Big Sur, but it doesn't seem to support HDR at those sizes though. At least, that is what I've been able to find out through Macrumors discussions.

My SO is in need of a new machine, as her 2009 MBP died half a year ago. She's currently looking at getting an iPad (Pro?) with the Magic Keyboard, since she has minor requirements.

I haven't been playing anything, but I've been trying to persuade her to get the 12.9" iPad Pro, so I could play Civilization VI on it when she isn't using it. I am so far unsuccessful, and that's the current extent of my gaming at the moment (Other than almost completing Super Mario Odyssey on Switch)

Snatched from an Ars Technica discussion on the subject:

In an interview with John Gruber, Craig Federighi said this is meant as a devkit only and will not be replicated for the actual ARM based Macs and they'll run custom silicon. He also said something along the lines of "its not bad performance for a dev kit" and, quote, "This is without our silicon team even trying".

Can these scores have been run using Geekbench from iOS on Big Sur, and thus with native ARM support?

Speaking of doing that - Is a GPU then only doing the 2560x1440 calculations, or is it doing processing based on the full 3440x1440 resolution, and thus running worse than it should?

I guess what I am asking, would my games run equally good on a native 2560x1440 monitor, as it would on a 3440x1440 UW monitor where you are gaming with black bars? Because I expect to do abou ~40% gaming, but would love an UW monitor for regular work.
