If I "upgraded" right now, I would need either a small pile of USB-C dongles to make up for the total lack of connectivity and an external hard drive to make up for the lack of storage capability, or just bite the bullet and buy a $500 all-in-one Sonnet dock to go with it in order to continue using my MacBook Pro as a desktop replacement. Which would add $500 to the overall cost of the machine.
Actually, no, you wouldn't have to – unless you really want to. In most cases, you would be fine with relatively cheap multi-port USB-C adapters, where quite good ones covering most needs (including multiple USB-A ports, 4k HDMI, Ethernet and SD card slots) are available in the $40–50 range.

This is relevant to my interests.

OWC makes the MacBook Pro-in-name-only into a MacBook Actual-Pro again. Storage, ports, everything. Interested to see how they intend it to function. Doesn't make it any thicker or heavier than a 2012 MBP (the prototype doesn't look like it achieves that, but I guess the finalized version will).
Kestrel (Falcon NW Tiki) – 4.0 GHz i7 4790K / 16GB RAM / 512GB Samsung 950 Pro M.2, 2x480GB Intel 730 (RAID0), 10TB STX BarraCuda Pro / GeForce GTX TITAN X 12GB
Iridium (MacBook Pro Mid-2012) – 2.7 GHz i7 3820QM / 16GB RAM / 2TB Samsung 850 Pro / GeForce GT 650M 1GB

When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.

It will have a ribbon style Thunderbolt 3 cable at the back and cost 800+

Not an option unless that PC runs Mac OS.

CPU jumps over mine aren't exactly amazing and probably won't be till Cannonlake hits, so I'm okay with continuing to run on this baby for quite a bit longer.

I just got my tester in. They aren't skimping on the storage anyway.
