I started out knowing absolutely nothing about the game, or the series in general, but I have to say I really enjoyed 'Before the Storm'.

I'd probably describe it something along the lines of an interactive drama/walking-talking simulator with mild adventure elements, but that doesn't really do it justice, and the story really rips along. The characterisation and narrative really draws you in, and the VA work is first class. It hits you right in the feels, y'know?

Downsides - you'll probably finish the game in a couple of evenings. Yes, you can replay it to explore different conversational arcs and outcomes, and you're encouraged to do so, but you may lack the motivation to do so knowing how things pan out in general. Also, the save system is very limited in that you can only jump back to your most recent autosave (or replay again, from scratch).

It's pretty fun as a teenage girl simulator. And I mean that in an entirely non-creepy way.

I'd be cool with another D3 expansion. I know the game gets a lot of hate, but I enjoy the design and playstyle. (Probably because I only dip into the game fairly infrequently, but play the hell out of it for a few weeks when I do).

Also (obviously!), an expansion should see the light of day several years before D4 makes an appearance.

So: the Mac gaming community I know best is made up of fellow old-timers who recognized that there was something special about Mac gaming, spent their precious time and money on it, and shared the ups and downs with me.

If you are reading this in the IMG forums then you are probably in that community. :-)

I very much agree with this. Now of course a lot of this may be nostalgia for a mis-spent youth, but Mac gaming 30-odd (yikes) years ago was special. Uninvited, Shadowgate, Prince  of Persia, Spaceship Warlock, Shufflepuck Cafe, Dark Castle, Spaceward Ho, Monkey Island...great memories. Even when the AAA gruel was particularly thin from the mid 90's I stuck with the platform, because there were still indy developers pushing out great games.

A new question for the Feral newsletter!

What is the best thing about belonging to the Mac gaming community?

I think it has to be the daily cheddar allowance.
