Apparently, Feral has developped specific libraries to port DX12 games. I haven't seen reports on performance of the macOS version, but the Linux version of the game is basically as fast as the DX12 version. I suspect the Metal version will not run as well because Metal is quite different from DX12, but Feral again did an awesome job with this port. :)

He said DX12 Like apis, Not straight DX12.... It sounds like they were using calls from further up inside the engine, and calling metal from there. Metal3 has many features that are similar to what youíll find in dx12, which is why the game requires 10.15.

The Mac version runs on intel gpus... Canít say the same for the Linux version.

So, this has been confirmed? I did notice that the game only was announced for "PC" and consoles, but the information available before I went to bed yesterday were thin to say the least.

If this turns out to be true, this would really have a different quality than not releasing Overwatch for Mac: Blizzard did have a valid excuse back then, with Apple's OpenGL massively sucking and Metal being total unfinished crap, but by now Metal has matured and has proven to be performant enough (at least in capable hands).

And that's the kicker... Blizzard themselves are doing great things with metal. WoW is as fast on macOS as it is on Windows with the multithreaded rendering enhancements. They've added metal back into HOTS and removed OpenGL, and Warcraft 3 reforged is also using metal...

It will be interesting to see if there is actually a hardware check that locks out older CPU's or if it is just a recommendation.

If not I might give it a try one day as I do have the GPU just old CPUs and generally most modern games tend to be OK if the GPU is up to it.

This will have to wait for a sale though as that is a lot of money for one game... same kind of price a console games and a lot more than the earlier games in the series.

It appears that mark doesn’t work for epic anymore.
But UE4 has just switched their entire shader pipeline to make use of SPIRV-Cross.

Maybe that’ll help for future games/updates.

They've added tessellation an tressFX support. :)

I canít select tessellation on my Mac (maybe a Nvidia thing). But the game is FAST. The performance increase is incredible.

They're currently hiring for macOS/iOS engineers.

Outside of publishing indie games, it seems they may be done with Linux AAA porting.
