Gah! It's worse! I didn't stick around to see if there are more sounds, because the audio now goes on and off randomly with a really annoying "POP!". Sigh...dual 2.5 G5, 10.4.3 here.

10.4.3 here.

Worth upgrading to 10.4.7, surely?

No, 10.4.7 seems like it broke too much stuff. I'll at least get 10.4.6 and try it on another partition though. I'm just not one of those people who feels the need to upgrade every time I see a higher version number...I have a nice stable system and I don't want to risk anything right now.

Fair enough. The impression I've been getting is that it was the Quicktime update that broke everything. I've been avoiding the last couple of Quicktime updates for that reason. But I don't claim to know the whole story.

So, with the new update officially here, what are your stories with 10.4.7?

Much better, smoother? All audio here finally?

10.4.7 will fix this - it includes (and Civ4 is now using) the updated version of OpenAL it provides. For 10.4.6 and less, you may have audio problems still.

How is performance now on machines that just meet the system requirements. Specifically Rev. A iMac G5's.

Aha, that's worth knowing, thanks! Although it's that same updated version of OpenAL that broke a few other games apparently. Well, I suppose I'm going to have to upgrade eventually...I'm thinking I'll wait until 10.4.8 and see if things have gotten a little more sorted out by then.

What other games were broken by this?

I believe X2: The Threat. I don't believe it refers to Aspyr games.

Brad,

Much, much better for the Rev A patch. Kudos! My MacBook Pro doesn't feel like it's going to melt. The sounds are pretty much all there based upon my past experience with the PC version.

A new annoying bug is a very frequent:

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000200

The console dump has been shipped to Apple via Crash Reporter.

Running 10.4.7, patch Rev A on a MBP w/ 2GB RAM.

We're getting very close! Thanks for your efforts.

Email it to Aspyr too. AFAIK Apple doesn't allow third party developers to access submissions from its crash reporter. You can find your crash logs in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/.

X2 works for me. I've played it once or twice since switching to 10.4.7 but no problems noted. (I am not running the latest version of Quicktime though. I'm one or two patches behind.)

Your mileage may vary.

I remember a post from Freeverse that claimed some of their own games might have broken, but I haven't heard anything since then. And I think Pangea may also have reported a possible problem.

It would sure be nice to get a handle on the widespread rumors and anecdotes about 10.4.7 and/or Quicktime.

OK, seems most of the issues were actually Quicktime 7 related or are being patched. (Like Freespace 2...to quote mtr, "Supposedly 10.4.7 provides full OpenAL 1.1 support, but it blatantly violates the 1.1 spec in at least two areas (what causes the hang, and what causes the no-sound issue)").

Does Apple provide fixes for their "auto-update" patches or do they just expect you to download the
combo-update and install that?

They expect you to manually download and install. One of the stupidest things they've ever done, really.

Does anyone know how this game runs on a standard MacBook (not Pro?) Is the integrated Intel chipset adequate, or will the graphics slaughter my system?

It almost certainly will slaughter your system. Intel graphics can't handle many current gen games.
