Macgamefiles.com might be worth checking out, as it was pretty well covering back in those days. Links might be dead, but you should have something to go by then.

Is there a specific game you are wondering about?

Just thinking back to some of the games I played:
  • Halo: CE got a Universal patch
  • Age of Empires II: Gold Edition got an OS X patch
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon got an OS X patch

Thx, "carbonized" Games have a "layer" so they don't need classic. I found out that EliteForce 1.0 uses classic on my mini and therefore stutters regularly (ATI.ControlPanel for Classic to activate vsync possible?) But the update to 1.1 brings a carbonized version that runs superbe on my mini and look gorgeous!!

Games like DarkForces (no 3D) runs very poorly, it's slow and disortet under classic, but superbe on my PM7300/8.6. Therefore OS9 resp. Gaming on a G4-Mini under Classic should not be a goal for me, because it leeds to a dead end, but lots of fine OSX-stuff for the powerful, small and silent mini. A very nice machine. If it has got native OS9 support it would be by far the best classic PPC/OS9/OSX machine. So I'll have to go native OS9 machine.

The R9200 is not bad chip. Halo is a bad port. Don't know if other halo-versions are better optimized.

I will do further testing.

TombRaider 1

- I have some serious issues in classic on my G4-mini.
- The keyboard commands lag very strange and Lara has missing textures.
- Is there any chance to optimize the game or the classic environment to get a better compatibility?

I did some further testing:

- JediKnight II
- JediKnight III

Both games rune fine in 1024x768@32Bit. I installed the "ultimate-bloodpatch" to JK2 and the "dismemberment-patch" to JK3.
These games have fantastic textures. I am able to go for "high", "extra" seems to be for 64MB-Vram and more. If I can get an
silent update g4 with 64MB Vram I will test this option.

I am not quite sure how to play they best. Updating to the last PPC Version and then no-cd upgrade, or using the latest UB with
no-cd upgrade. I have the originals here, but I HATE changing the CD-Roms in order to play if there is nothing read from the CD
beside the copy-protection. But that's another story.

Doomsday Engine also runs quite well (Doom1, Doom2, Heretic1, Hexen1). I have the upgrades for the textures, the music and the models,
but it looks better in original to me.

Another fantastic game is RedFaction. It's an OS9 title, but Version 1.2 has the OSX binary. It looks great and runs perfect on the G4 mini.

AVP1 runs quite well on the G4-Mini, AVP2 does not start on 10.4. I'll have to check out, why it refuses to start.

I did some further testing. Currently I am using a dual setup with MorphOS beside 10.3.9 (G4-MINI/32MB).
So I can watch a lot of Amiga-PPC-Demos that do not need special "gfx-chip-calls".

This old MacRaider page has some helpful information. The early Tomb Raiders used an early OpenGL library that doesn't play nice with OS X. Suggests you download MacGLide and tweak a couple of settings.

That'll probably help with some other games, too.

I already knew that page and tested "macglide", but I am not fully satisfied.
The Videos do not play correct and the game is not as smooth as it is on a OS9 machine,
but it's OK. What settings should be tweaked?

You can play around with the resolution and refresh rate settings in the TR1 setup utility. If that doesn't help, maybe increase the memory allocated to the game or test different versions of MacGLide.

You can also adjust the temporary memory via Classic preferences.

No matter what, it'll be a trial and error process to find the best possible performance. And you may never get as good OS 9-native stability or smoothness for some games.

Some games like "sin" have way more issues in classic, but beside my sin-version there exists an OSX-Version that I don't have yet and should run fine with 10.3.9
