Correct me if I'm wrong guys but the bottom line is that it's a platform that charges you more to play pre owned games, has a HD you can't remove, and makes a big deal out of rehashed call of duty and forza titles?

If so... then epic facepalm.

I haven't had time to check out the announcement yet, but hearing that it requires you to pay a fee for used games and the console itself looks like something Zenith designed in 1985 does not bode well. That and apparently the console won't even start without that silly Kinect gimmick peripheral attached either? Uhh...

And then theirs microsoft claiming a console launch with 15 exclusives. Still though, you have to install retail blu ray games on a 500 GB HD you can remove/replace? That's all? Doesn't sound too good doesn't it?

Wait, must install BDs? On 500GB?

UH.

Yeah, that's gonna run out of space real fast.

I guess they want you to only have 8 games installed at any given time, so they charge you for each additional install of the same games if you ever want to replay them again.

Anywaaaay, I liked how you could easily switch between things on the fly, and seemingly instant. I was amazed at the lacking game focus though, but I guess they want to blow everybody away at E3, to take Sony on directly.

If you can believe various reports on other gaming sites, it's still unclear whether the installation is mandatory. If it is, 500 GB would really be ridiculously little storage space.

On the other hand: it's not always online. Yay. A lot of "cloud" crap, though, that requires an internet connection.

No Xbox 360 backwards compatibility – that might be something hard to stomach for the existing user base. Interestingly, almost all major (non-mobile) platforms now use x86-compatible CPUs (the Wii U being the only exception).

And the case design is definitely ugly (the PS4 seems to go in the same direction, though).

Microsoft seems to be back to its bad design roots. From the logo to the dark Xbox green and the case itself -- it's not even close to Apple standards.

More ore less 'always-on' functionality, a crippled to useless 'second-hand' concept and boring, repetitive EA and CoD games? Hello, Microsoft. Good to have you back in good old fashion!

If Sony play their cards well, they have a real chance to win the race in the next console cycle.

I start to wonder how well this new console generation will fare against the ubiquitous iOS and Android mobile gaming ecosystems.

I think we only have to look at the pitiful numbers of Wii U sold to find out.

If that means new IPs  on the playstation 4 vs the xbox one having crappy new IPs that is. Still I can't really see myself buying a new console right now or even this year, unless the playstation 4 launch has new enjoyable games. And if the playstation 4 has a removeable harddrive, unless the games don't require installation.

X-Bone does have mandatory Kinect, though, as in it won't turn on without it hooked up. Get ready for any MS-sponsored TV show to shout commands to turn it off like their X-Bone announcement did.

I finally caught up on the details. No wonder they didn't get down to specifics in the reveal.

Your games get locked off from use if you haven't connected to Xbox Live for more than 24 hours? Giving your disc to a friend to play or selling it requires you to pay a fee (read: $60, not $5 or $10 as "fee" would make you assume)? Can we say "draconian and anti-consumer as frakking hell"?

They're using system DDR3 as VRAM? WTF? The hard drive is tiny and not upgradeable (at least not without voiding your warranty) yet they expect you to use it as a DVR and install hugemongous Blu-ray discs? The thing won't even start if you don't have the Kinect plugged in and watching you and listening to everything going on in the room? No backwards compatibility to speak of or even the possibility of it? Not even crappy streamed BC like Sony seems to be preparing to offer?

I double dipped for the first time ever on the 7th gen and got both a PS3 and an Xbox 360, but I was not feeling the urge to do the same this time around. But I wanted to see what was up with the new Xbox before deciding on PS4 or the next Xbox.

Thanks, Microsoft, for making the decision a no-brainer. Voting with my wallet and not supporting you jackholes. Granted I'll probably wait on the PS4 until either Killzone 4 or Gran Turismo 6 is out rather than grabbing it at launch, but at least I know it's not gonna block me from gaming if I don't authorize myself every 24 hours and make me rebuy the game to let someone else in the room on another console use it. Microsoft is making Sony's PS3 launch hubris look like a minor overstep.

Jaguar is looking pretty tired, so a comparable SNB/IVB/Haswell might even get away with only 4 threads (2 cores + HT or 4 cores), and the X-Bone's GPU is about the same as the PS4, too, so a 660 or higher. Nice. I'm kind of hoping MS went with bluetooth controllers, though. I'm starting to reconsider my DualShock 3s but I don't want a MS dingle.
