Make Escape Velocity 4, and you are back in business!

Don't know what to make of it. Rudy Richter (Growl guy and F/T Ambrosia dev) said they did close on his Twitter feed ... "Employer closed up shop today."

So who knows what's going on. Sad if it's true.

Guess we'll have to wait and see. I always hoped to see a Redline 2 from them but knew the chances were slim.

That would be sad. Having said that, it doesn't feel like they've made or updated a mac game for a few years now, right? At least that was my impression the last time I looked at their website. I miss some of their games like Chiral and their take on Asteroids.

Seems they laid off several (many?) people, but so far, Ambrosia themselves say they are still in business. It would be really sad if another classic Mac game studio after Freeverse would go down the drain. But just as choiceweb0pen0 said, they haven't been very active for the last couple of years.

Well they haven't made any games in ages, just their software stuff. Which is good..but I want Ambrosia games! I grew up playing many of them and have been waiting for more. Oh well, maybe it won't ever happen.

If they ever do go out of business, they better do something about those annoying rotating registration codes. Don't want to be stuck with a bunch of non-working Ambrosia products.

I cut my proverbial teeth on Ambrosia, I remember getting EV on one of the first Mac Addict disks as a kid. Played that for hours and hours. Hell then in college EV:Nova was responsible many a sleepless night. I've also been a long time user of Snapz.

Companies like Ambrosia and Spiderweb hold a special place in my little Mac heart. I'd always hoped Ambrosia would get back into games development and toss out an EV 4 at some point, guess that will never happen now.

There's no question they've felt like they've been on auto pilot the past few years. I waited months for an update to iToner when updates broke it, eventually i went to Ringtones.

I wonder why they never went App/iOS store.

How about an IMG official got hold of them for a short interview? I would read that.

If it happens someone needs to ask the Tough Question: is Andrew Welch over his feud with Ben Spees, so that an Intel port of Ferazel's Wand could  happen?  I would pay so much money for that.

this. barrack, ape iron and maelstrom were very well done games that id have thought would have done well on iPad.

They should go through their catalog of games, pick all the best sellers like EV, Maelstrom, Ares, etc. and redo them for OSX and Windows, and where applicable, iOS/Android. Hell, the Steam Workshop is practically tailormade for things like EV mods.

They could probably make a killing. Those games were insanely fun, had endless replay value, but didn't require a huge time investment except where you wanted to.

Take the revenue from that, hire a team, build Escape Velocity 4, and then probably quintuple the money. Easy.

Worth mentioning that Maestrom was open-sourced a while back, and there is an OS X port: http://www.libsdl.or...rom/binary.html

Sad news but inevitable. Sure they are still in business but we can read between the lines. Just sufficient staff to ensure that money can still come in profitably but no pretence that they are actively seeking more games or looking for some way forward. Skeleton staff at best.

The constant calls for a 3D EVN were stupid. Everything about EVN/EV/EVO is 2D. Battling craft in 3D in the EVN way would have been impossible. And the world would have had to be redesigned too to remove the 2D flatness. And so on.

Instead better resolution of ship graphics, better battle art and better planet art and such would have been the way forward. Also would NOT have necessitated a total redesign. All they needed was a willingness and a couple of intern artists willing to make their mark in the games industry. Win Win for all involved.

(Yeah the engine as such was notoriously difficult/fussy for budding modders. So easy to go wrong and so very difficult to debug on a Mac. If only, if only it had been more modder friendly from the get go)

Edit: Heck a really bad thought. My Rego codes need retrieving yet again. Better do asap and save to the cloud or somewhere so they don't go astray.

Edit#2: Their website says EVN only works up to OSX 10.7. Sad.
