I have seen around the web people who have migrated from a PC to Mac often ask if RPG Maker or similar is available for OS X. They are then given the response along the lines of use Bootcamp or a Windows emulator to run it on Mac.

Now this has always kind of baffled me, because sure... they can continue work on their game.... but in the end it'll still be a Windows only game despite them creating it using a Mac.

It'll seem I am not the only one to think along these lines however as there is a current project underway to allow completed games made with RPG Maker VX to run natively on Mac. It is called RGSS Player for MacOS X, and while it may not be a complete solution as you will still need Windows to make your game, if this project is successful your game can at least be cross platform.

Where were we? This is my second attempt. happy.gif

I am the evil master mind behind the pending project.

This is a complete solution considering that it allows indie developers to distribute their games on MacOS X. The entire distribution process {testing, running, packaging, distributing, localizing, etc.} can be performed without Windows. Moreover, our current and upcoming tools for RPG Maker VX/XP are also portable friendly and should be available on MacOS X as well.

You can post your questions here and I will be glad to answers them.

The project planning is slowly moving forward to become a round product. It wouldn't be much of a product vision if it hasn't had a clear view on what an indie developer would get. In a nutshell, RGSS Player for MacOS X includes:
  • RGSS Player for MacOS X
  • Deployment User-Modifiable Script
  • Porting Games Developer Manual
  • One-Year Free Updates and Bug Fixes
  • One-Year Limited Developer Support
  • Flexible Licensing Scheme
Additional services are also offered to accompany the product. Get more details here.

It's also important to understand the point of such project: it is to allow any indie developers to make games. The flexible licensing should be as much convenient to small indie developers as the big ones.

By the way, is there many indie developers around here? I would be glad to get the input from our Inside Mac Games fellows. smile.gif

Thanks for fixing my title tBC. (a bit late on my behalf I know tongue.gif)

I'm actually somewhat surprised that no one else was as excited as me about this news. Then again I suppose the internet is massive place and despite the community size here not everyone would have used RPG Maker in the past, especially with it having been exclusively for Windows prior to BackOrder's hard work.

I'm, tentatively, very excited about the project. There aren't enough independently developed games on the Mac. Cobra Blade being one of less than ten developers that I'm immediately familiar with.

I'm honoured that my name is one that you remember when thinking about Indie Mac Game developers. happy.gif
