Interesting development for one of those most prolific developers for Mac gaming. Aspyr will continue to work independently and will retain the same leadership for at least the short term. Hopefully this doesn't negatively impact any future Mac projects that they may have planned.

For those who are unaware, Embracer Group seems to be the same organization as THQ Nordic (which itself is a new organization that spawned out of the ashes of THQ's bankruptcy). They have made waves in the gaming industry recently by just the sheer number of acquisitions that they have been making - buying up studios and IP left and right.

They also purchased Gearbox studios (Borderlands) around the same time.

Here are just some of the studios/IP that Embracer owns:

Embracer Group is the parent company of game businesses with a catalog of over 200 owned franchises, such as Saints Row, Goat Simulator, Dead Island, Darksiders, Metro, MX vs ATV, Kingdoms of Amalur, TimeSplitters, Satisfactory, Wreckfest, Insurgency, and World War Z, amongst many others.

Embracer Group’s other groups include THQ Nordic GmbH, Koch Media GmbH/Deep Silver, Coffee Stain AB, Amplifier Game Invest, Saber Interactive, and Deca Games. Embracer Group has 57 internal game development studios in 40 countries.

Interesting. To be honest, I'm not sure how much interest Aspyr has had in Mac gaming for a while now. While they usually have been one to focus on big blockbusters and quality vs. quantity, I think the last thing they ported was Civilization VI in late 2016, and Mafia III in early 2017? Now, they have still supported those games with all their DLCs and expansions. And have done some 64bit patches and supported the Borderlands 2 DLC in 2019. But still, feels like a lack of desire to focus on the Mac in the last couple years.

It seems like they've pushed more into their own publishing/development of indie games, and also focused on porting some things to iOS and other platforms.

Huh. Embracer seems to be on a shopping spree: they also acquired Gearbox.

Aspyr released Planet Coaster for Mac in November 2020.

I agree though, it seems like their priorities have changed and they have bigger goals in mind then just purely Mac development. They've brought some big games to iOS (most recently KOTOR2: The Sith Lords) and also ported some old (but big) games to Switch/Xbox/PlayStation such as the old Jedi Knight games.

Ya Embracer seems to be setting up the pillars for some sort of gaming empire. They are just acquiring everything they can get their hands on. 57 studios across 40 countries is a massive gaming empire. Most of those studios are indie or unproven, but some of them are big studios and/or ones that have big IP.

For comparison, EA owns 20 studios.

Yes, they are also recruiting for a next-gen AAA RPG, and have hired Bioware veterans. Rumor is that it's a new KOTOR game.

We've been saying our goodbyes to Aspyr for years now.
Somehow this feels like the final nail in the coffin though.
Especially with their recent push into console ports territory.

What future Mac projects? I don't think there are any.

I was purely being hopeful about some other Mac project that they have in development. As Cougar pointed out above it seems like they are likely making a new KOTOR game as we speak. Hopefully their experience with porting to Mac, Linux, and iOS (Metal api) means that the new KOTOR game will have mac support from day one.

Doubtful. Now that Aspyr is owned by a competitor, Activision aren't going to let them near their franchises ever again.

Now that I mention it, this situation also looks bad for any further Civ games for Mac.

I Guess Feral could step in to port future version of 2K/Firaxis games since they did XCOM.

It was also empty when they recently announced Total War: Warhammer III. They don't put everything on the radar.
