Valve and Double Fine just announced that the Mac port is up. The update includes achievements and a modified Meat Circus, so everybody wins. I have a boxed copy here somewhere but I bought it again on Steam because I'm just like that. It's now up on the Mac App Store, too.

Huh. Some of these ports of late are really coming out of the blue. Not that it's a bad thing. :)

No friggin' way! And I had just completed the PC version from GoG in a wrapper!   Who did the port? Double Fine? Is this native?

The wrapped version ran fine yet crashed randomly when loading a level or on the main screen so this is welcome even though I just completed the game.

Here's hoping they make a steamplay enabled sequel!

I've gone ahead and repurchased it since it's only $10, is updated and I like to show support for bringing great games officially to the Mac like this.

Double Fine got the publishing rights back in June of this year, they have some iOS programmers at hand so I'm assuming they wanted to bring it over for love of the game, plus I think it was OpenGL.

OK I was poking around in the partially downloaded game and found evidence that it's cider... namely a transgaming folder and a c_drive folder. :P Well, here's hoping they fixed the crash bugs I was running into in my own port at least. :P... The game ran great otherwise. I guess this means cider games can have achievements? Still it's kind of disappointing even for me... so much for the theory of them using their iOS expertise on porting the game. ;)

Wow, I liked this game so much that I installed VMWare Fusion just so I could play it. It ran like my grandmother partnered with a drunken sloth in a potato-sack race (Slow and crash-y) but it was still pretty awesome. Even the lamest port ever has got to better than that, so, to make a long story short, I'm totally buying this sucker!

Yeah like I said the only problem my own unofficial wrapped version had was random crashing during level loads or during the title screen but other than that it ran great.. I ran it at HD resolutions with FSAA on. Presumably they tailored the wrapper for this release so it doesn't have those crash bugs.... and even if it did you can get official support for it... hopefully.

BTW, in order to get the sound working properly I had to install the windows openal drivers into my wrapper.. presumably they have already done this on the official version.

What a lovely surprise. Bought this for $2 during a Steam sale several years ago, played through the beginning but lost my progress due to a HD crash. Glad I waited to get back into it!

Meh. Good game, but lazy-ass port. So I assume that's the other fabled long-awaited franchise Transgaming planned to bring to the Mac?

I was almost thinking that but one game doesn't equal a franchise. ;) Well... at least they made a new icon for it with sizes up to 512x512.

Transgaming has a tendency to exaggerate, so...

Anyway, I don't know if anyone has read Double Fine's press release regarding this, but it's actually funny:

EXCELLENT GAME PSYCHONAUTS GETS MAC VERSION, FREE STEAM UPDATE, VAULT VIEWER iOS APP

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – September 12 -- Double Fine Productions, Inc. announced today a new Mac version, new PC update, and new companion iOS app for one of its premiere titles, the award-winning Psychonauts.

As of today, Steam users may download a free update to their Psychonauts game which includes--for the first time--achievements, cloud saves, and a slightly modified Meat Circus.

"We are really excited," said Double Fine President Tim Schafer, "to finally be answering fans' requests for a more difficult Meat Circus."

Mr. Schafer was probably joking about that last part, as Meat Circus, one of the original game's most difficult sections, has been made slightly less punishing in this update.

"Mostly because I'm getting older and it's hard for me to press buttons that quickly. Hey, don't forget to mention the achievements!" Schafer added, unnecessarily, because we already mentioned that feature.

"What about the part I paid for?" asked Steven Dengler, CEO of Dracogen Strategic Investments, which is a private investment firm interested in making cool things happen, and not a clan of evil dragons, plotting to take over the world like it sounds. Double Fine has partnered with Dracogen to bring Psychonauts to the Mac OS X. The Mac version is available now on Steam and the Mac App Store, as well as several different online digital retailers.

"I have been a fan of Psychonauts and Double Fine for a long time," continued Dengler, "and I'm extremely happy to be helping them bring their games to new platforms like the Macintosh. All hail the supremacy of Dragons!"

To show how excited they are about their first ever Apple product, Double Fine has also produced a free Psychonauts companion app for iPhone/iPad. The Psychonauts Vault Viewer lets players view all of their favorite Memory Vaults from Psychonauts (even the ones they never found) on their handheld iOS device. Every vault from the game is included, plus newly-recorded audio commentary from Tim Schafer and Scott Campbell for every slide of every vault. The app is available now in the iOS App Store.

"Excellent," Said the dragons. "Everything is moving forward as planned."

Yeah apparently whoever Dracogen Strategic Investments is they paid for a cider license from transgaming. :P

Well so far the official port seems more stable when it comes to exiting the game to the main menu (and loading levels as it had random crashes before) but I need to play it longer to be totally sure. Also maybe a little better performance (which wasn't bad at all before but it has a slight edge now). The gamepad support isn't better though and it works best with a logitech rumblepad 2 rather than the 360 controller.

I'm a few hours in, and no crashes so far.  Actually it's really solid, the first Cider port I've played which I could say is pretty much on par with a native port.  Of course the game is 5 years old....

Apparently they are using a brand new revision with it.. 7119 which is the first Cider revision in the 7xxx series that I have seen so far. My previous version was in a 6xxx series which did crash every now and then during level loads. So it probably has something to do with revisions they have made to Cider recently that affect this game in particular.

Nice, this is a game I've been interested in for a long time but never played because of the lack of a Mac version. Kinda sucks having to choose between Steam and the MAS though. Skip waiting for Steam to load, or have achievements? 'Tis a dilemma to be sure…

Just saw this in my Steam App, accidentally.

Bought it also long time ago for $2 on Steam, so I am more than pleasently surprised to suddenly find it in my Mac library :)

PS: and when  you start up the game the big fat "Transgaming" Logo blows away all doubt if this in native or not.
