So: the Mac gaming community I know best is made up of fellow old-timers who recognized that there was something special about Mac gaming, spent their precious time and money on it, and shared the ups and downs with me.

I'd like to meet this community, can you direct me to their location.

If there had been Ambrosia releases of their classics sometime between 2012 and 2016 I think they would have been big hits. Now, there's just too much noise. And frankly too many good games (and bad) to get lost in. They would have been the cream rising to the top them.

Bethesda is using MoltenVK to provide metal support for ESO so it can't be that hard to do.

Spoiler: that was a jab at bethesda.

They fired their competent mac developer a while back because they cost too much so thats kind of on zenimax that they can't implement it right.

#450447 Aspyr's upcoming projects

Spoiler: Nvidia sucks.

Unsure how many people were clambering for Black Ops 3, hope it does well so they can afford to port Borderlands 3.

2 had a quick turnaround but I don't think the Mac version was announced until a couple months after the Windows release.

Core game was updated to 1.8.5 (and is now 64-bit!), I successfully joined a PC game this morning. But 90% of games in the browser are DLC games so I can't join them.

I tried verifying the files but the HD pack and Lilith DLC both show as not installed. idk, probably valve fraked something up.

One might dream that the BL2 update delay has been because Aspyr has been working behind the scenes on this DLC along with the HD update. I don't think that is the case but I am dreaming it is.

I've confirmed it by playing it. System Requirements are now minimum version of mac OS 10.12.

I don't have anything earlier than 10.13 installed on a machine right now to verify how accurate that is. I believe the 1.8.4 system requirements was 10.8 minimum version.

"listed as Mac compatible", the DLC and Texture Pack don't actually install. Who knows. Aspyr sent out an email so one would assume they should be working soon.

Welp, Mac version just downloaded a 10.2 GB patch. Looks like the DLC and HD packs are live now.

Yet another RPG classic returns: The Bard's Tale IV.

Bard's Tale IV Mac version delayed again . At least we get the directors cut. Still no word on the Mac versions of Bard's Tale Trilogy, iirc a Mac version was specifically called out in one of the backer emails.

One question: I tried to boot the Mini to my old Mac Pro's boot disk (has El Capitan) and it never progressed past the initial blank screen. Are new Macs prevented from booting to old versions of Mac OS X? (I got the same behavior when I tried to boot my son's new iMac to Snow Leopard.)

All Macs will have a minimum build required. Apple used to document these publicly but no longer do. Apple used have reference builds that would work across a number of models (I am talking Classic Mac days).

The current assumption by apple is OS deployment via Recovery/Internet Recovery which will always supply a minimum supported OS to a Macintosh client.

I really love the undocumented builds like macOS Mojave 14.14.4 18E226 and 18E2035. 18E2035 was a machine specific build (2019 15" MBP) that can boot any other Mac but 18E226 can't boot a 2019 15". I still run into desktop support doofuses that will try to clone, copy, or otherwise boot an unsupported build on a new machine and will spend hours trying to make it work before escalating and I have to tell them they are a doofus and to follow documented procedures (i.e. don't do that)

I boot off the external TB (2TB Micron). I use the internal 256 for scratch space if i'm working on a project in iMovie or something. I don't really have to juggle or dick around with symlinks. I appreciate that class of storage when i'm trying to cut a video.

The most "future proof" option would be a Mac Mini + eGPU. You can connect an eGPU to an iMac but the support is kind of janky. mini->eGPU-> monitor everything is accelerated to the connected display.

I personally don't have any issues with gaming on my 2017 iMac (Radeon 560) but I am admittedly a low maintenance gamer.

The future of Hackintoshes is hazy at best with technologies like the T2 and SIP.

I have a very nice iMac that I bought with max RAM and a tiny internal drive. I have a 2TB Thunderbolt SSD that I boot off (along with various other bulk storage). Apple's storage isn't overpriced for the class of storage they use but I don't need 3200 MB/s r/w at home.

I don't have time to be futzing with hackintoshes or windows. Every time I have to use the popsnizzlebox to play ghost recon with The Butt Scratching Cat it tries my patience.

Love All-In-One Macs myself.

Mac Pro is going to be the first ARM Mac btw.

There's lots of reasons to hate Nvidia. Rushed products, popsnizzlety drivers, popsnizzlety partner programs, super shady business practices. Apple will do well to continue shunning them.

Just don't get the weird crush everyone has over Nvidia. They've never impressed me.

Apple doesn't care about scientific researchers. Apple cares about growth in big BIG markets. The same markets that are LOVING the iPad but losing desktop market-share to chromebooks (because of security). They have an entire new division dedicated to fortune 500 (stuffed with SMEs on things like Citrix and Cisco). Local virtualization is a niche, most big organizations have VDI infrastructure they use vs. local VMs.

It's going to be super fast. 32 core base model with available 64 core upgrade. It will have serviceable memory, all other expansion will be via thunderbolt 3.
