Out of curiosity: I guess it's still not possible to use an eGPU under macOS without an external display?

Hi not yet with OpenGL

Anyway Metal and OpenCL application/games can be accelerated without a need of an external display.
I will try soon with Mad Max, Deus Ex and FireWatch thanks to Metal!

Mad Max doesn't use Metal, and as far as I know, neither does Firewatch (yet – the patch is still not out).

They never even patched Firewatch to fix the black screen nvidia bug. Game was decent but Campo Santo and Panic are on my support popsnizzle list.

How tricky was it getting the eGPU recognized by OS X?

It looks like TB2 is still pretty powerful as well, going by this video. Less performance than TB3 obviously, but still a massive graphics performance jump.

Heh i think my only comment or "complaint" (complaint is too strong a word, really) is that in the original thread, you say that nVidia cards would draw too much power....

All of them except the 1080 are lower TDP than the RX 480. =P

Even the 1080 is only 20W higher.

Yes you're right. Anyway one single 8-pin power is very handy. The card is completely silent when doing light computing, and also under heavy load the fans are doing little noise. Tomorrow I will pubblic more benchmark on eGPU.io
Geekbench and OpenCL for example!

Those performance numbers seem really weird. The RX 480 outperforms the 780 Ti both in total performance at all resolutions and performance per watt on the Windows side. Makes me think something was really not working properly with your RX 480 setup. Polaris is fully support by macOS now that the Radeon Pro 460 is available on the MBP, and so the 480 should have fine driver support. In this video the guy upgrades his trashcan Mac Pro to the best available CPU and an external 480 and it handily outperforms the D300's built into the Mac Pro.

A 780 Ti performing 2x faster than an RX 480, is the equivalent to the 780 Ti performing 2x faster than the Orignal GTX Titan - it just should not be happening.

It seems Radeon drivers are quite slow, or bugged and not working properly with eGPU.
780 is the most optimized card under macOS, there wed also a Nvidia news item about that.

Would you be able to run real world tests such as games, Final Cut Pro, etc. ?

I am having difficulty believing that the 2x performance increase on the 780 Ti is going to hold up. In the video I linked his eGPU RX 480 beats dual D700's in OS X in both synthetic and rendering benchmarks.
