Version 38 of Scorched 3D was just released yesterday   I've been playing since yesterday and it's worked great. Scorched 3D is a 3D version of Scorched Earth - and it has great OpenGl graphics. Though the minimum system requirements are not mentioned on the web site, I've found it requires at least a 16 MB (or more) video card and a G3 (or faster). It runs under OSX 10.3 (under X11) and also Windows, Linux and Unix - http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/  The game is free and very popular - the Windows version 38 has been downloaded more than 312,000 times since it was released 34 days ago.

To install the game under OSX, follow these instructions:

download the file and place it in your Documents folder

at the command line (Terminal or X11) type:

cd /documents

tar xzf scorched3d-38-macosx.tar.gz

If you have an old version of Scorched3d already installed, then rename it by typing:

sudo mv /usr/local/games/scorched3d-bin /usr/local/games/scorched3d-bin.old

To move the file you downloaded and unpacked into the proper directory, type:

sudo mv scorched3d-bin /usr/local/games/

To launch the game, from X11 type:

cd /usr/local/games/scorched3d-bin

./scorched3d

there seems to be a lack of documentation included with scorch (and their website) on how get it to run on X11, so i'd pin it.

btw, don't u think scorch falls under the "arcade" category than strategy?  Although it does have some strategy elements, just not as heavy as compared to myth or homeworld 2.

I think Scorched3D falls into the strategy category. There's definitely strategy involved when the wind speed is 5, your opponent is hanging off the side of a mountain, they're using a magnetic shield  and you've got 40 seconds to line up a shot.

Add more people into the mix and the strategy becomes even more obvious. Temporary truces seem to pop up all the time.

OK, I'll pin this.  So is the general consensus that Scorched 3D is strategy?  The web site seems to bill it as such so I would tend to lean toward that definition.

I am waiting for confirmation from anyone that this is a strategy game before pinning it here in the Strategy forum.  There was a suggestion in this thread by MightySlugMan that it belongs in the Arcade forum.  I'm waiting for input from you guys.

:) So does anyone here play Scorched 3D online with their Mac? My handle is FAB4 and my current ranking on the Scorched 3D server is 111. It's a tough crowd - there are many excellent players.

ok, so i got X11 working, but when i follow your directions (i have 38.1, so i adapted your directions to 38.1), and i start with cd /documents   i get "No such file or directory"

Can you help me?

Type "cd ~/documents" instead.

OSX does make things a little confusing - there are actually two Documents folders on the hard drive. There's the harddrivename/Documents folder and then there's username/Documents folder. FYI to get a disk directory from X11, just type ls[return]

ok thanks,  but my games folder is in my applications folder in my harddrive, not my user drive.  what is the command for that?  and the sudo mv command says it is a rename command.....

Scorched3d is hard coded to go into /usr/local/games/ - you MUST place the Scorched3d folder there or the game won't be able to find any of it's data files.

the mv command is the move command - it moves the Scorched3d folder from your documents folder into the /usr/local/games folder

I've followed the directions to get this to run via Terminal with no luck. Here is the log of my text from the command:

I looked over your log and it doesn't appear there's a games folder (for Unix games) on your system. To fix this, type:
cd /usr/local
mkdir games

Type ls (lowercase LS) to get a disk directory and confirm there's a games folder on your system

Another error I saw was the tar'd program file decompresses to the scorched-bin folder. Gorden Camp (Scorched3d programmer) told me he made a mistake in naming this folder - it should be scorched3d. To fix this, I've changed step 6 to:
sudo mv scorched-bin scorched3d
sudo mv scorched3d /usr/local/games/

Note that while you can install Scorched3d from the terminal, you MUST run the game from the X11 command line by typing:
cd /usr/local/games/scorched3d
./scorched3d

FYI I've updated the Installation instructions at IMG and Scorched3d forum's to include this info. Please read over the updated instructions and if you run into a problem let me know.

Updated 'Unofficial' instructions for installing and starting Scorched3d 38.1 under OSX 10.3.x or later:

Note all X11 commands must be followed by [return]
Note spaces in the commands are important

1. download the program and place it in your Documents folder

2. Run X11 and type these commands:

4. tar xzf scorched3d-38.1-macosx.tar.gz

5. If you have an old version of Scorched3d already installed, then rename it by typing (otherwise go to step 6):

sudo mv /usr/local/games/scorched3d /usr/local/games/scorched3d.old

6. To move the file you downloaded and unpacked into the proper directory, type:

sudo mv scorched-bin scorched3d
sudo mv scorched3d /usr/local/games/

7. To launch the game, from X11 type:

cd /usr/local/games/scorched3d

./scorched3d

That's it - you should see the Scorched3d program window. Click the
'Change Game Settings' icon and click 'Invert Y axis' and click 'OK'

To restart the program - just do step 7 (skip the game settings - they're saved)

Installation Troubleshooting:
You may have received an error saying xxxx file/directory does not exist.

If you saw this error during step 3 it's because OSX has TWO Documents folders and you picked the wrong one! There's the harddrivename/Documents folder and the username/Documents folder. To correct the error, type cd ~/documents

If you saw this error during step 6, it's because there's no game folder on your system (for Unix games). To create a games folder type:
cd /usr/local
mkdir games

To display a disk directory from X11 and confirm the games folder was created, type ls (that's lowercase LS)

For other errors - recheck your typing. One wrong character and the command won't work (don't you just love command lines Wink In steps 5 and 6 above, there MUST be a space between '...3d' and '/usr...'. In step 6, there's also a space between '...-bin' and 'scorched...'

The Scorched3d program is hard-coded to reside in the /usr/local/games/scorched3d folder and the
Scorched3d data files must be in the /usr/local/games/scorched3d/share folder

FYI tar decompresses the file, mv is the move command and sudo is the super user command that gives you administrator access.
