The latest in the saga of "is more VRAM better?"

I compared three 2010 MacBook Pros running four 3D accelerated games:
The 15" model with 2.53GHz Core i5 and GeForce GT 330M with 256M VRAM.
The 17" model with 2.53GHz Core i5 and GeForce GT 330M with 512M VRAM.
The 15" model with 2.66GHz Core i7 and GeForce GT 330M with 512M VRAM.

Here's my test results so far:

THE BOTTOM LINE: Unless you are running your 3D accelerated game on an external 30" Cinema display at 2560x1600, max quality settings, and 4X Anti-Aliasing, having 512MB of VRAM gives you no advantage over the MacBook Pro with 256MB of VRAM.

OSX is pretty much always CPU limited since the optimization of drivers and the game itself (through the process of porting it from Windows) is too crappy to really challenge the graphics card!

That is definitely not true as a blanket statement of modern Mac gaming. I know with Borderlands during testing based on comments from NV and AMD that the game was pushing the new high end cards to the limit and there was not much more we could extract from the card in terms of unused cycles. This is not to say that the drivers, game code and OpenGL cannot be optimised more for the Mac platform (you can always find improvements) but it is disingenous to say that graphics card is not being stressed on Mac games. In most cases especially with the more modern games the card is given a thorough workout while playing, leaving the card idling is leaving performance on the table so it is not likely something that obvious will be missed.

More VRAM is BETTER even with iGPU. If you change VRAM for HD3000 (Mini2011) from 512MB to 1024MB (8GB Ram) then you get better textures and more effects on ID-Tech4 (D3/Q4/etc.) on ULTRA-Settings.
