#450528 Prodeus (A bloody gore throwback to the 90s)

What do you mean? It's coming alongside the director's cut in June, which I'm waiting for anyway, playing in Windows.

I didn't kickstart Bard's Tale IV to have to wait 2 years for the Mac release. Until it's in my hands (as promised in the kickstarter) it's vaporware as far as I'm concerned. Cosmic Star Heroine is another one that the Mac release has never materialized.

Looks like Quake 2 with upgraded graphics.

Edit:

Man, that game looks bad!

I should preface that I loved STRAFE at the 90% off price I got it at GOG for. Game is called STRAFE, can confirm I strafed a lot. Game met expectations.

This looks pretty good. I am a sucker for 90s style FPS games. I loved STRAFE. Unfortunately I have been burned by kickstarter's promising Mac before.

Looking at you Bard's Tale IV.

#450501 Vulkan Officially Released - No Mac Support

Posted by macdude22 on 10 April 2019 - 09:09 AM in IMG News Discussion

There's a kernel interface to get compute data in and out of system busses. There's no kernel interface for a new graphics API. Because of privilege boundaries it would be difficult and/or slow for someone to develop and implement a low level graphics API like Open GL. It can be done but the end result is often subpar. See Duet Display. Any casual thought of outright replacing the OpenGL frameworks went out the window with SIP and the available kernel interfaces don't cut the mustard for a graphics API.

The user graphics of OS X is handled by the `WindowServer` process along with I/O Kit. User graphics combined with kernel graphics could be considered the analogue of `win32k.sys` on Windows. The user graphics part of macOS is handled in a separate process while Windows provides the GDI32 APIs which calls “win32k.sys` directly. Apple’s approach could be considered more secure as user memory is not shared between processes. Anyone who disagree's should look at the hundreds of vulnerabilities and exploits involving GDI over the years.

Wow, that would be quite a disappointment. I really do hope your birdie is wrong :o

The Mac version never got the steamworks upgrade the Windows version got after gamespy shutdown. Do not expect the enhanced edition to get any additional love here.

I do not understand the love for Steam. I'm not pro or anti Steam or Epic but Valve puts in the bare minimum work required on both Mac/Win versions of Steam. They've been host to their own share of controversial decisions as well.

I'd assume so, since BL wasn't on the list of titles Feral dropped from sale late last year due to the upcoming 32bit app-ocalypse and is still sold today, which probably means that a 64bit / Metal update is coming some time this year. Would be strange not to include the visual and gameplay enhancements while they're at it.

A little birdie told me there are no plans to update the Mac version to the Enhanced edition. It may get a 64-bit update but that's it.

2 had a quick turnaround but I don't think the Mac version was announced until a couple months after the Windows release.

Spoiler: Nvidia sucks.

Unsure how many people were clambering for Black Ops 3, hope it does well so they can afford to port Borderlands 3.

Well, I hope for Gearbox that Epic comes around to add social features like a friend list before BL3 launches there. Might be important for a co-op game. But since such things aren't even on the EGS' roadmap

There is a friends list. It's even cross platform between xbox and PC/Mac.

#450383 "Apple Arcade"

The iPad version of Civ VI is the full enchilada. How is it limited? The graphics are toned down (though you can fiddly them up) and the Rise and Fall expansion isn't yet available but other than that...

The titanium, glyph-free Apple credit card looked like a desirable artefact to own. (Not that I'd ever use the thing for its intended purpose).

Ya the bennies are not much better (or worse) than my costco citi (worse really, I get 4% on gas with costco and I drive a lot) but I may sign up to get the apple cut titanium card.

The presentation telling us that there will be announcements sometime later with pricing and availability. gj.

I don't know enough about this to decided how I feel. I will say Arcade was the most interesting thing in a snoozer of a presentation.

#450329 Mac Upgrade path for a gamer?

Posted by macdude22 on 22 March 2019 - 07:00 AM in Mac Hardware

I just use the 256GB internal on my iMac to store a few things I want to load ultra fast (borderlands, WoWs).

Everything else (including boot) is on a 2TB external thunderbolt SSD (also have a 6TB Toshiba rust for bulk storage). It is under 30 seconds from cold boot to desktop with the external SSD. It's not really a slouch. I was not going to frak around with symlinking my home folder.

I think this is it, though I don't know if I remember all of these characters. Was this on a demo disk for old Macs?

It may have been on a demo disk. I had a 575 and we got it in some sort of pack of games that also came with The Labyrinth of Time (I also played this a lot).
