I vaguely recall it looking worse than FA-18 Hornet but it playing a lot better when I was a kid. Played it a lot more than Hornet anyway.

This would have been v1 or maybe 2, I don't remember. It would have been fall/winter 95-96 when I played them the most and the inter web says 3.0 came out in 97.

I have been trying to whittle down the few games in my 360 backlog that are not available for Backwards Compatibility. I had been trying to choke down Final Fantasy XIII but wow its not good. I like the battle system well enough but the story and the on rails gameplay were just terrible. I found myself falling asleep every time snow had another diatribe about how he's gunner save everyone. I gave it 15 hours, which was probably 10 hours too much. So checked that trilogy off my list and moved onto Kingdoms of Amalur. Holy crap, now that's fun. It's kind of like WoW and and Elder Scrolls game had an offline baby. Fast fun combat, interesting loot, crafting that doesn't require a PhD. Already more hours into it than FFXIII and loving it. I regret not giving this some attention when it was released.

#449969 Blizzard Games to Utilize Metal API in OS X

Overwatch sucks so we're all the better for it.

#449913 Steam DB Watch

They fired their competent mac developer a while back because they cost too much so thats kind of on zenimax that they can't implement it right.

Bethesda is using MoltenVK to provide metal support for ESO so it can't be that hard to do.

Spoiler: that was a jab at bethesda.

#450501 Vulkan Officially Released - No Mac Support

Posted by macdude22 on 10 April 2019 - 09:09 AM in IMG News Discussion

There's a kernel interface to get compute data in and out of system busses. There's no kernel interface for a new graphics API. Because of privilege boundaries it would be difficult and/or slow for someone to develop and implement a low level graphics API like Open GL. It can be done but the end result is often subpar. See Duet Display. Any casual thought of outright replacing the OpenGL frameworks went out the window with SIP and the available kernel interfaces don't cut the mustard for a graphics API.

The user graphics of OS X is handled by the `WindowServer` process along with I/O Kit. User graphics combined with kernel graphics could be considered the analogue of `win32k.sys` on Windows. The user graphics part of macOS is handled in a separate process while Windows provides the GDI32 APIs which calls “win32k.sys` directly. Apple’s approach could be considered more secure as user memory is not shared between processes. Anyone who disagree's should look at the hundreds of vulnerabilities and exploits involving GDI over the years.

#448925 Elite: Dangerous

Ya it sucks I gave those honkey's money for a game they stopped functionally supporting 3 days later. Was really disappointed with the half hearted Macintosh support from the get go but I stupidly gave them money thinking they would have a real go at it. Runs great on Xbox at least but I have been very disappointed with Frontier's handling of this over the last couple of years.

I'm sure they were looking for any reason to stop supporting macOS without wanting to word it as incompetence.

I'd hardly call what they churned out starting to support macOS. They cranked out a POC and never supported it. It should have been a free beta at best.

Spoiler: Overwatch sucks, blizzard did us Mac folk a favor by not tainting our platform with that turd.

#450219 Answer questions for the Feral newsletter!

Posted by macdude22 on 21 February 2019 - 07:41 AM in General

If there had been Ambrosia releases of their classics sometime between 2012 and 2016 I think they would have been big hits. Now, there's just too much noise. And frankly too many good games (and bad) to get lost in. They would have been the cream rising to the top them.

So: the Mac gaming community I know best is made up of fellow old-timers who recognized that there was something special about Mac gaming, spent their precious time and money on it, and shared the ups and downs with me.

I'd like to meet this community, can you direct me to their location.

I agree. There is NOTHING like playing a good game of Starcraft or Civilization on a console platform!

Literally, nothing like it!

Civilization Revolution was the best Civ game so 100% agree.

2 had a quick turnaround but I don't think the Mac version was announced until a couple months after the Windows release.

Unsure how many people were clambering for Black Ops 3, hope it does well so they can afford to port Borderlands 3.

#449277 GeForce NOW for Mac - Beta Invite

Posted by macdude22 on 06 June 2018 - 07:29 AM in Windows Gaming

The beta didn't require a CC so I can't imagine how they would bill for it without your input, should the day they start billing arrive.

Along with the app there are two small files located at

~/Library/Preferences/com.nvidia.crimson.agent.plist
~/Library/Caches.com.nvidia.crimson.agent

MacDude, this is your first warning.  If you continue to challenge preconceived nerd notions with professional knowledge of inside Apple information and facts from your stupid high powered industry position I will be forced to remove you from your sacred duties as IMG Moderator.  You have everybody in a tizzy with your dum faks.

("Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please." Mark Twain)

The only fact is the XNU kernel for source 10.12. and 10.13 from Apple has ARM64 targets for the macosinternal SDK. Everything else I've said is speculation. As I've said, I'm just a dumb hyperchikin. Don't go lumping me in with all the true experts here.

iOS will finally be in a place where its target market won't just be able to use it as a computer but will prefer using it as a computer.

Guess what. This is your average consumer. Apple's bread and butter. The ARM Mac/iOSputer will come in the next 5 years because it will be a better, more convenient, device for the majority of Apple's customers. The organization I work for has over 10,000 iOS devices and under 2000 Macs. We use iOS devices for everything. Communication. Patient Access. General day to day office work. Sure we have researchers that still need powerful desktop workstations. The majority do not.

We power users from the 90s are not Apple's bread and butter anymore. They don't need to make us 9600s and style writers. Even me, the 90s power user, just uses his iPad 80% of my personal time.
