MacSoft today announced the release of the Age of Empires III, allowing gamers to get a taste of the real-time conquest in the latest chapter of Microsoft and Ensemble Studios award-winning Age of Empires Series. The demo allows Mac gamers to test out both the single-player campaign, Skirmish mode, and the persistent Home City feature.

Two complete Campaign missions – Get a taste of the single-player campaign with a pair of full scenarios, complete with story elements
Home City – Explore how the persistent Home City feature changes the way real-time strategy is played by customizing it between missions
Skirmish mode – Battle the way you want to as either the Spanish or the British on one of two maps: Texas or New England
The Age of Empires III demo is available for download from Macgamefiles.com and weighs in at 419 MB.

The Pro link will only work if you are logged in with your IMG Pro account on Macgamefiles.com. The regular http link will get full pretty soon. Grab it now before everyone jumps in :)

to be fair though, ive got some of the cheapest internet around (im a student after all), and its 2mbps (thats mega BITS). so getting 217kbps (thats kilo BYTES) is pretty impressive... in other words... i never get that even under good circumstances.

anyway, the demo performs really quite well on my system... and thats not with everything turned off, thats with most settings turned on. i can see myself buying this at some point in the near future.

I already have the game it it works well on my G4 1.25 DP running OS X 10.3.9, but I should warn everyone who also runs 10.3.9 that the latest Quicktime update breaks the game somewhat.  There is a workaround:

Problems with Quicktime 7.1.5 and OS X 10.3.9
http://www.destineer...pport/aoe3.html

but I am hoping for a patch, either to the game or Quicktime to fix this.  Luckily, I read about the problem before I updated Quicktime, so, using Quicktime 7.13, my game works wonderfully!

It's a great game, BTW, just like the other "Age of" games.  :)  Now, I'm hoping for a Mac version of the expansion...

I'm really annoyed that I can't CMD-TAB or CMD-H out of the game to the desktop the way I can with Empire at War.  Why is it so difficult to implement this functionality?

Does the Mac version multiplayer work with Windows PCs? Me and a few friends set up a LAN game a while back, and I'd consider getting the Mac version if it meant I didn't need to boot into Windows to play multiplayer against my friends.

...for a while. It get's repetitive rather quick. You can win most battles with the same standard mix of units pretty easily and quick. It's still fun, but not that great.

What did you think of the addition of the "card" decks?

One of the nicer additions. But I think that players with less "experienced" hometown can be a bit handicapped in online games. But overall, this doesn't affect the gameplay very much.
