#452466 Mac issues with World of Warcraft patch 8.3

Posted macdude22 on 14 February 2020 - 03:27 PM

I apparently had a token that let me boost to 110. It hasn't crashed over a couple hours of play with the graphics turned up to 8. I have -idea how to play though. This is completely different than the last time I played around WOTLK.

Blizzard is one of the only companies that have TCC exceptions (go check out /System/Library/Sandbox/TCC_Compatibility.bundle/Contents/Resources/AllowApplicationsList.plist) so it's safe to say they are on good terms with the big A.

#452415 OK, here goes: GeForce Now....?

Maybe if I was closer to a data center it would be better. The network test always passes (marginally, average 40ms latency) but any time I have tried to use it the stream drops frames and gets pixelated while giving a big ol network issue icon in the upper right corner. I'm sure the closest data center is in Chicago and my ISP routes west before it routes back east to Chicago. I have some hope that xCloud might work better with a huge MS datacenter in Des Moines.

At least it's free to use. Just buy an Xbox or a Switch (or both)

LOL at input accessories requiring a fraking kernel level driver in 2020.

#452299 How to safely remove an APFS partition?

Posted macdude22 on 22 January 2020 - 08:11 AM

A physical volume can be formatted as APFS with multiple APFS containers. APFS containers are similar to traditional logical partitions, in that they are presented to the user as independent volumes (like on HFS+). However they share the physical device free space vs. an HFS+ partition which requires logical partitioning of the free space. e.g. a 1TB drive could have 3 APFS containers sharing the same 1TB free space but under HFS+ you would have to split into three 340GB partitions.

If you do not have any data in the APFS container you desire to remove it can be removed without fear of data loss.

#452172 DRM-ridden game stores are made of pure evil

Are you running Catalina? That looks like one of the privacy dialogs in 10.15 (Settings ¬ Privacy ¬ Files and Folders). The goal is to give users COMPLETE control over apps that can access directories and files. Kind of sucks but the modern threat arena is nasty. The age of open computing is over.

I appreciate what they were trying to do by integrating in-game rewards into the social menu. Making the manufacture contact you via "mail" thus the world feels more alive. But I forget about it ALL THE TIME because normally you are in the social menu to deal with party grouping not in-game mechanics. I would rather there be a normal inventory location for these in-game related messages and items.

you are just getting started at level 50. Time to grind anointed loot to build the perfect character and work your way up mayhem levels. I see a lot of complaints about less focus on legendaries but honestly it gives it much more freedom to customize your character IMO. In BL2 you ended up grinding for the same legendaries with little regard for character specific boons.

#452001 Has iOS removed most controls?

Posted macdude22 on 17 December 2019 - 04:16 PM

Apple removed the download over cellular limitations in iOS 13 due to customer demand (it was 200MB in iOS 12). As mentioned above there is Low Data Mode but you probably just want to turn of Automatic Downloads in iTunes & App Store. The onus will be on you to download App Updates at a time of your choosing.

Unfortunately there is not a native consumer friendly way (that I know of) to prevent iOS point releases from downloading OTA (13.0.0->13.0.1). Major releases still require WiFI (13.0->13.1). We block mesu.apple.com with a profile but these are managed devices with supervision.

Make sure you are playing at a halved resolution not the native retina resolution. 4k is rough on the best of cards. IME BL3 defaulted to the native display resolution instead of a more reasonable subset. Well done ports tend to do this automatically. Even the Sims 4 defaulted to an appropriate halved resolution on my iMac.

#451856 64-Bit compatibility topic

CodeWeavers is at the heart of a number of ports. World of Tanks and World of Warships are both CodeWeavers ports. Proton is the result of a direct partnership between CodeWeavers and Valve.

It launches on the Air but it locks up during the claptrap loading screen. I have set the config file by hand to various resolutions and graphic settings, which it respects but continues to lock up during the claptrap loading screen. The behavior is the same loading from the internal storage or external storage under 10.14 or 10.14. I feel like it should at least load. I assume there is some shader caching/computation here and that's where it's failing.
