Pixar .... was a department of LucasFilm.
[George Lucas] was in some minor financial troubles, and Pixar, at that point, was not particularly successful.
Lucas had very little to do with it, other than overseeing it.

No, the parallel isn't "very different".
Who cares why or who does the selling/buying and for what reason ?
Party1 has Entity1.
Party2 says to Party1: "I wanna buy Entity1."
Party1 says "Yes" or "No".
Bingbangboom -- that's it.
Gabe Newell goes to extremely great lengths to badmouth consoles.
He's nortorious for it.
So, given that, who is the absolute last person in the world you'd expect to
stride out on stage during a PlayStation 3 pressconference ?
Gabe Newell.
But he did make an appearance, didn't he ....
After all of that naysaying ....  after all of that screaming from the rooftops: "We're PC Only!" ....
Because, in the end, money talks, my friend.
And Apple has a lot of it -- more than the aforementioned Micro$oft, in fact.

I haven't the slightest idea what Valve'd gain by selling to Apple.

All I can say is: stranger things've happened ....

Well, I beg to differ. It was my view that a fire was being started, and a good amount of fuel was soon to be poured on it. What you are saying is fair enough, but that is just how I found it (that was coming to a head, which could become nasty).

Well, from my general experience (not trying to be arrogant or anything even like that), I have found that rumours and general things on the internet and media can be founded in nothing at all; that is just me.

OK, I wasn't going to poke around any since things seemed to have died down on their own, but it looks like I have to say this after all.  Keep it civil, and if you find your blood boiling, you probably need to step away for a while and not reply while said blood is doing the boiling thing.  Any further posts where people start down the typical internet flame-war path by taking potshots at each other instead of discussing the topic will be deleted.  Thanks.

yadda yadda yadda
It was a, what, 6 word aside, out of a post that 99% addressing the topic and only the topic.
My use of "Um," wasn't meant as any kind of personal attack, it was intended to lighten the tone of the post which, aside from that, was basically slapping down your rumour. The only reason why "Um,"  " :D " and "Lol" and whatever else has come into written text is because it's so difficult to properly express yourself and your intent without sounding like a complete tool.
So the first line of my post came off wrong. My bad.

(at the mods, feel free to remove the above section. I don't think it comes under personal pot shots, but I also didn't want to put this in a needless PM)

Quote

No, the parallel isn't "very different".
Who cares why or who does the selling/buying and for what reason ?

There's several key differences, which I thought I'd made clear. Pixar wasn't a huge success at that point. Lucas wouldn't have sold them off if they were. Valve is a huge success.
Lucas had no emotional attachment to a minor department of his grand company. Valve is a company all of its own which Newell and Lombardi built from scratch, and so are invested in it heavily.
Lucas had the need for some money since he'd just come out of a costly divorce. Valve is safe as houses monetarily. They have been since their founding.
Pixar was a minor bit player in the industry when they were sold and took around a decade to hit their stride. Valve is in the upper echelons of the games industry. (They might not be a top 3 studio for you, but popular opinion regards them as such.)

Big differences. If Valve was a minor company looking for financial security, as Bungie was in 2000, then maybe this would be even remotely logical. But they're not.

When it comes to buying and selling of developers, I completely disagree with you saying that stranger things have happened. There's not a single example that I can think of that has been stranger than this would be. I gave you several examples of developers selling out, and they all had a good reason.
There is nothing that Apple can offer to Valve that Valve doesn't already have. You stated Valve returning to the PS3 after having lambasted it for years. It was unexpected, yes, but their position of not bothering with the PS3 was the illogical move rather than the return to it. Likewise, bringing games to the mac in the way they're doing it is pretty logical too.

If they sold themselves to Apple, would they then go Apple exclusive? That's even more lunatic than ditching the PS3. They'd be dropping around 95% of their market there, and be developing for Mac and iOS, a platform that has no really satisfying control system for FPSs, which is the only type of game that Valve has ever made.. Apple would have hamstrung Valve.
Or Valve continue making games across all the platforms they want. Apple would get Steam, but what does that matter to them? iAds' recent unveiling has shown Apple are happy to do stuff from scratch themselves, and if they really wanted it, they'd be much more likely just to expand the capabilities of iTunes, as they have done several times already. That's the precedent here. Apple only really buy stuff they don't already have.
But say they do that anyway. What would be the point of buying the whole of Valve. Just to let them carry on doing whatever it is they're doing now? Well that's needless for both sides. Valve can develop for whatever platform they want right now. If Apple come out with a dedicated console, then Valve could quite happily develop for that too...

The rumour is completely spurious. Stranger things have not happened, there's always been logic to this kind of thing, and here there is no logic.
