Still playing Subnautica. Several of you quit playing after losing a piece of equipment to a glitch, so I have been backing up my saved game regularly. (Thanks for the warnings!)

I thought having a Prawn suit and Cyclops would let me breathe easier; instead I'm paranoid about taking them anywhere. But I do still love swimming around underwater, and am always getting close to some new gadget or weapon that will improve my quality of life. But to find these things you have to keep going further and deeper. I get more stressed the deeper I go so I still think I'm not going to finish the story.

To support the developers I bought the early-access expansion/sequel. (An Epic coupon I'd forgotten about cut the amount in half, but hey I tried.) It's also a chance to  report some of the visual glitches that the Mac version suffers from.

For instance, if you are curious on the performance, I am still using a Vega 56 eGPU on an 8-year old 2012 Retina MBP over Thunderbolt 1

I have a 2018 Mini + eGPU Vega 56 setup. I'm mostly happy with it.

- there was a bad eGPU-related crash-on-wake problem over the last year, for Macs with T2 chip. FINALLY fixed by Catalina 10.15.6. A Mojave fix is rumored soon.
- when a game stresses the CPUs, the Mini gets very loud and hot. Though judging from my daughter's laptop it would not be considered unusual for a Windows machine, Steve Jobs would not have approved.
- the usual arguments about what the same money could buy in the Windows world, don't bother responding to me with those, I'm not interested. :-)

Waiting for ARM may not be a bad idea. Or at least waiting for more details to come out.

I finally upgraded to Catalina to resolve a nasty wake-from-sleep crash with eGPUs. (Though Mojave will probably get that fix eventually.) So I finally got to try Crossover running a 32-bit app on Catalina.

Humble's DoubleFine bundle reminded me that I had never played Costume Quest, so I tried that first. It ran so well it was freaky. My old Darwinia bottle also ran, no need to re-bottle it or change any settings.

The only downside was the Quest bottle was CPU heavy and immediately made my Mac Mini's fans run very loud. I would need to experiment some more to see if that's a universal problem. I'll try some other games soon.

Crossover thinks they will be able to run on Apple Silicon, but has not announced anything officially since the dev kits were released.

Note that when the instructions tell you to restart to see new files, it means to restart the emulator, NOT use the Finder's Restart menu.

Just for fun I tried out the two shareware games I released in the early 90's. I got one Type 10 crash, and many of the sounds play about 0.5 seconds too late. But they did basically run. It's not good enough to replace SheepShaver but it is a lot easier to set up. A nice start, hope they keep working on it (assuming Apple doesn't tell them to take it down.)

Looking in the source code, it appears to be a Javascript port of the Basilisk II 68K emulator.

(Also, regarding SubNautica, I suck at these types of games so much I couldn't even get out of the tutorial part of the game - putting the capsule fire out - without dying. So, go figure)
That sounds frustrating. Once the fire is out you can relax as long as you've turned off hunger and thirst. So if you wanted to just swim around in the shallows as I'm doing, you were almost there!
